How to Ace the German Theory Exam (in English!)

Updated for 2025

The theoretical exam (Theorieprüfung) is the first major hurdle. It consists of 30 multiple-choice questions. You can make usually 10 "error points"—but be careful, it's trickier than it sounds.

The Basics

  • Time: You have plenty of time (usually 45 mins), but most finish in 15.
  • Format: Computer-based at a TÜV or DEKRA center.
  • Language: You can take it in English! (and 11 other languages).
  • Cost: ~€25 for the test + whatever your school charges for materials.

The "Error Points" System

Each question is worth 2 to 5 points.

  • Passing: You fail if you get more than 10 error points.
  • The Trap: If you get TWO 5-point questions wrong, you fail immediately (even though that's exactly 10 points). 5-point questions are usually about Right-of-Way.

How to Study

Do not just read the book. The only way to pass is to grind the app.

There is a fixed pool of ~1,000 potential questions. The exam pulls 30 of them. If you memorize the pool, you will pass.

Recommended Apps

  • Führerschein Gold: Popular, good English translations.
  • Fahren Lernen Max: Often provided by driving schools, very official.
  • ClickClickDrive: Modern interface.

Tricky Questions

German road rules (StVO) are logical but strict. Pay attention to:

  • Right before Left (Rechts vor Links): The golden rule of German intersections without signs.
  • Video Questions: You watch a short clip, it disappears, and then you answer. Watch for kids, cyclists, and mirror checks.
  • Math: Yes, math. Stopping distance formulas: (Speed/10) x (Speed/10) = Braking Distance. Memorize these!

Test Day

Bring your passport or ID and your appointment confirmation. Don't stress—if you've consistently passed the mock exams in your app 5 times in a row, you are ready.
