How to Get a Driving License in Berlin: A Step-by-Step Guide
Getting a driver's license in Berlin is notorious for its bureaucracy, but it doesn't have to be a nightmare. Here is the breakdown of the process.
1. The Prerequisites
Before you even visit a driving school, you need to check a few boxes:
- Eye Test (Sehtest): Can be done at any optician (Optiker). Costs about €7 or is free.
- First Aid Course (Erste-Hilfe-Kurs): A 9-unit course. Many providers offer this in English in Berlin.
- Biometric Photo: Similar to a passport photo.
2. Register at a Driving School
Find a school that suits your needs. If you don't speak German, this is critical. Look for schools that offer theory classes in English (or use an app) and have English-speaking driving instructors.
3. The Application (Bürgeramt)
Once you signed a contract with a school, you must apply for the license at the Bürgeramt. This costs around €40-50. Processing can take 4-8 weeks.
4. Theory & Practice
You must attend 14 theory lessons (90 mins each). You can take the Theory Exam in English (and other languages like Turkish, Russian, Arabic).
Practical lessons include mandatory "special drives" (Sonderfahrten): 5x Overland, 4x Autobahn, 3x Night driving.
