If you just moved to Berlin, you might be wondering if you can drive with your home country's license. The general rule is simple: Yes, for 6 months. After that, it gets complicated.

The 6-Month Rule

Your foreign (non-EU) driver's license is valid in Germany for **six months** starting from the day you register your residence (Anmeldung). You typically need to carry a translation unless your license is in English.

Important: After 6 months, your license expires in Germany. Driving with it becomes a criminal offense ("Fahren ohne Fahrerlaubnis").

United Kingdom (UK) 🇬🇧

Good news for Brits: Even after Brexit, your UK license can be exchanged for a German one without any exams. You simply apply for an exchange (Umschreibung) at the Bürgeramt, hand in your UK card, and get a German one.

United States (USA) 🇺🇸

It depends on your state! Germany has reciprocity agreements with many US states.

  • Full Reciprocity (No Exams): Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming.
  • Theory Test Only (No Practical): Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee.
  • Practical Test Only (No Theory): None usually fail into this specific category alone without full reciprocity shifts.
  • No Agreement (Both Exams Required): California, New York, Georgia, Nevada, etc. You still don't need the mandatory lessons, but you must pass both theory and practical exams.

India 🇮🇳

Unfortuantely, India does not have a reciprocity agreement with Germany. This means:

  • You do not need to take the full theory lessons (14 classes).
  • You do not need the special mandatory drives (12 hours).
  • BUT you must pass both the Theory Exam and the Practical Exam.

Most driving schools effectively treat this as a "shortened" education. You will still need a few driving refresher hours to pass the strict German practical exam.
